E-bike rental prices have spiked over the years. Now, Massachusetts has a plan to bring the cost down.

In a groundbreaking initiative to advance sustainable transportation and provide affordable mobility options for low-income communities, Metro Mobility, a Cambridge-based startup, is using funding from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) to expand access to Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs). Metro Mobility has installed its innovative ChargeLock™ e-bike stations in several communities throughout eastern Massachusetts, offering extremely low-cost e-bike rentals to income-qualified residents and creating a blueprint for affordable electrification of the world's transportation systems.

The micromobility industry is undergoing a transformative shift as the inefficiencies and environmental drawbacks of dockless, free-floating e-bike and scooter deployments become increasingly apparent. In response, Metro Mobility in Cambridge, MA is leading the charge with its innovative ChargeLock™ charging stations, heralding a new era of sustainable, efficient, and user-friendly micromobility solutions.

The ChargeLock system will see its first large-scale deployment with Unlimited Biking, the country’s largest bike rentals, tours and experiences operator, deploying ChargeLock™ stations and e-bikes (Ninebot Urban A200) at hotels across the United States. ChargeLock™ stations, now available globally and compatible with Segway e-bikes and scooters, are poised to disrupt the shared e-bike and scooter market as an industry-standard low-cost charging and locking solution for new self-charging fleets and dockless fleets interested in pivoting to a hybrid or docked model.

Segway and Metro Mobility are excited to announce a partnership to offer ChargeLock™ stations for use with Segway shared vehicles. The ChargeLock station incorporates charging and locking in a single connector, providing a simple and reliable station at a fraction of the cost of competing docking solutions. ChargeLock stations enable scooters, e-bikes, and future Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) designs to share the same stations and provide an easy user experience that avoids the pitfalls of traditional docking.

Awardees receiving ACT4All funding include: Metro Mobility – $1,000,000: The company will deploy three different e-bike ownership and share models in Greater Boston municipalities, including Gateway Cities such as Quincy and Malden. Metro Mobility will work with affordable housing organizations and employers to serve low-income residents, essential workers, and renters in Environmental Justice areas.

Electric bikes are now available for rental at select Park & Pedal sites in Newton, MA. The first in the nation program allows drivers to park at electric bike charging stations, then ride an e-bike for the remainder of their journey, avoiding last mile traffic congestion and expensive downtown parking.

Metro Mobility has introduced the ChargeLock™ scooter station to address the challenges of scooter share currently faced by operators and cities alike. The lightweight modular station features a patent pending cable design that incorporates charging and locking in a single connector, and is poised to vastly reduce charging and redistribution costs while keeping sidewalks organized.
