Metro Mobility Launches E-Bike Rentals and ChargeLock™ Stations at Newton Park & Pedal Sites
Newton, MA – Summer 2021 – Electric bikes are now available for rental at select Park & Pedal sites in Newton, MA. The first in the nation program allows drivers to park at electric bike charging stations, then ride an e-bike for the remainder of their journey, avoiding last mile traffic congestion and expensive downtown parking.
With the introduction of e-bike rentals, Park & Pedal delivers micromobility to the vast number of commuters traveling in and out of Boston on a daily basis. While existing bike share options work for short trips within the city, those systems offer little to the suburban commuters who would benefit most from a traffic-proof two-wheel commute. By providing designated parking spaces within biking distance of employment centers, and pedal assist e-bikes that can be rented from any smartphone, Park & Pedal has created a new way to commute.
Park & Pedal e-bikes are available for all-day round-trip rentals, and on-board locks allow users to secure the bikes to any rack or pole at their destination. The bikes remain rented for the day, ensuring their availability for the return trip. After riding back to the station, users simply plug the e-bike into a patent-pending ChargeLock™ cable that locks the bike, ends the rental, and begins charging. The user-friendly system guarantees that the e-bikes are always fully charged for the next rider.
“The average round-trip commute in the US is 24 miles and growing, and suburban commuters have few alternatives to driving,” said Park & Pedal co-founder Gabe Montague. “The post-COVID return to work is already bringing traffic back, and with so many favoring single occupancy vehicles, experts are predicting more gridlock than ever. Park & Pedal provides a convenient alternative by combining the car and e-bike in order to use the most efficient vehicle for each leg of the journey.”
The pilot program includes e-bike stations at Newton City Hall, an ideal location for commuters heading to Boston College, Brookline, or the Longwood Medical area, and at Forte Park and Albemarle Field, both located near the Paul Dudley White Bike Path. Easy access to the path along the Charles River provides a pleasant ride to Harvard Square, Kendall Square, and destinations in downtown Boston.
The “Park & Pedal” app is available for download in the Apple App Store, with an Android release coming soon. The development of Park & Pedal technology was funded in part by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.
